Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, an obligatory annual charity for Muslims who meet the threshold of wealth (nisab). Through Zakat, Muslims purify their wealth and support those in need. SMA offers three ways to fulfill your Zakat: applying to receive Zakat through our partnership with the National Zakat Foundation, contributing Zakat al-Fitr at the end of Ramadan, or paying Zakat al-Mal on accumulated wealth.
Apply for Zakat
SMA has partnered with the National Zakat Foundation to support Muslims in need across Canada. If you or someone you know qualifies to receive Zakat, please apply through their secure process.
Donate Zakat al-Fitr
Zakat al-Fitr is a small charitable donation made before Eid al-Fitr by every Muslim, including children, to support those in need so they can also celebrate the holiday.
- How to donate: e-transfer to [email protected]
- Memo: indicate “Zakat al-Fitr” in the e-transfer memo
- Deadline: before Eid al-Fitr prayers
- Amount: $10 to $15 per person in your household
Donate Zakat al-Mal
Zakat al-Mal is the obligatory annual charity on accumulated wealth (cash, gold, silver, business assets) for Muslims who meet the nisab threshold. The standard rate is 2.5% of qualifying wealth held for one lunar year.
