Program Instructors
Hafidh Aqeel Baqar:
Aqeel is a coordinator for the SMA Youth Leadership Program. He works as a Healthcare Analyst and is an Epidemiologist by training. He received his Bachelor’s of Science in Neuroscience and Mental from Carleton University and Master’s of Science in Epidemiology from the University of Ottawa. He has been working at the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) for 3 years. He has been involved with the Ottawa Muslim Community in various roles over the last 10 years. He taught Islamic Studies and supervised/coordinated youth programs at multiple institutions. He is passionate about youth development, leadership and empowerment. He hopes to make meaningful contributions to the muslim community and serve to be a source of support for young individuals. During his spare time, he loves to play sports, eat an unhealthy amount, and spend time with his wife and their cat
Brother Aftab Shaikh:
Br. Aftab is an IT Team Leader with 10+ years of leadership experience, dedicated to fostering innovation and collaboration. He is a firm believer that every skill is a trust to be passed down. He is technically new to the Muslim community in Ottawa, looking for the ways to contribute to the youth. He is also an avid badminton player and biking enthusiast. In his free time, he study the Quran, reflecting on its teachings and their personal application.
Brother Nabil:
Nabil is a mentor for the SMA Youth Leadership Program. He is an Actuarial Analyst by profession, with a Bachelor’s of Math from the University of Waterloo. He has been working for the Canadian Medical Protective Association for over fourteen years and is a father of two young boys, and husband to Sophia. He has been an active member of the Muslim community, volunteering with several Muslim organizations across Ottawa. He is passionate about engaging with and shaping the future of our youth, and believes in providing a safe space for our youth to express themselves and learning to navigate challenges they face everyday.
Sister Sophia:
Sophia is a mentor for the SMA Youth Leadership Program. She is a Chartered Professional Accountant by profession, with a Bachelor’s of Commerce from the University of Ottawa. She has been working for the Government of Canada for over ten years, wife to Nabil, and a mom of two. She has been an active member of the Muslim community, volunteering with several Muslim organizations across Ottawa. She believes raising our Muslim youth to be both strong in their faith and being active within their community is essential in maintaining the Deen for our future generation.
Sister Farah:
Sr Farah is a computer engineer, educator, deen student, wife and mother Masha’Allah. She has a Bachelor of Engineering degree from McMaster University, and a Queens University Masters of Education degree in Program Evaluation and works in IT management. She enjoys volunteering in youth focused community programs Alhumdulillah.
Sister Aena:
Aena Numan is a staff member/mentor for the SMA Youth Leadership Program. She is a marketer, book-lover and cat mom. Aena has a bachelor’s in psychology and a minor in communication degree. She has volunteered with organizations such as Almaghrib Institute, Islamic Relief, and MAC. She believes that with the right tools, Muslim youth can learn to become great leaders and pillars within their communities.
